Children with growth hormone deficiency were treated with two forms of growth hormone-releasing hormone: the longer GHRH 1-40 given in pulsatile nighttime doses, and the shorter sermorelin (GHRH 1-29) given twice daily. While both peptides promoted growth in the majority of children, conventional growth hormone replacement therapy produced significantly better results, leading researchers to conclude that direct growth hormone treatment remains the preferred approach for most children with growth hormone insufficiency.
