Patients with anorexia nervosa showed a normal growth hormone response to sermorelin injection, comparable to healthy controls, despite their chronically low estrogen levels. Blocking estrogen receptors in healthy women with tamoxifen also did not significantly change the growth hormone response to sermorelin, suggesting that the growth hormone abnormalities seen in anorexia are not caused by low estrogen affecting the pituitary's response to growth hormone-releasing hormone.
