This review covers mitochondrially derived peptides as novel metabolic regulators, including humanin, MOTS-c, and SHLPs 1-6. These peptides, encoded by small open reading frames in mitochondrial DNA, influence weight gain, visceral fat, insulin sensitivity, and glucose-stimulated insulin release, representing a new class of circulating signaling molecules.
