Growth hormone secretion and gene expression were studied in cells from six human pituitary tumors, revealing considerable variability between tumors in their responses to regulatory signals. GRF stimulated both growth hormone release and mRNA levels in most tumors, while somatostatin and bromocriptine suppressed secretion but had no effect on growth hormone gene expression. This disconnect between secretion and gene regulation suggests that in these tumors, the pathways controlling growth hormone release and those controlling its production are not tightly linked.
