Using genetically engineered mice lacking the gene responsible for familial dysautonomia, researchers found that loss of this gene causes slow, progressive retinal degeneration starting with ganglion cells in the temporal retina. This pattern mirrors the vision loss seen in patients with familial dysautonomia, and the mouse model provides a platform for testing potential treatments to prevent blindness in these patients.
