Scientists found that growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) receptors are present in placental tissue and in a placental cancer cell line, and that receptor levels are significantly lower in tissues from failed early pregnancies. When they blocked these receptors with a GHRH antagonist, the cancer cells showed reduced survival and increased programmed cell death through stress-related pathways. These findings suggest the GHRH signaling system plays an important role in placental development and could be a target in placental cancers.
