Structural studies using NMR spectroscopy revealed that thymosin alpha-1 interacts with cell membranes by inserting into negatively charged regions where phosphatidylserine is exposed, and that it uses serum albumin as a carrier protein in the blood. These findings suggest the peptide reaches target cells via albumin transport, then inserts its N-terminus into damaged or apoptotic cell membranes to trigger immune signaling cascades.
