This structural biology study investigated how thymosin alpha-1, which is unstructured in water, inserts itself into cell membranes. The peptide preferentially interacts with negatively charged membrane surfaces, particularly those containing phosphatidylserine -- a molecule exposed on the surface of dying cells -- suggesting this membrane insertion may be the initial step in triggering its diverse biological effects.
