Both thymosin alpha-1 and interferon alpha were effective in treating severe acute pancreatitis in rats, reducing organ damage, inflammatory markers, and mortality. The treatments improved immune function by increasing T cell levels and decreasing harmful enzymes and inflammatory cytokines, cutting mortality from 50% to 25% with thymosin alpha-1 and 33% with interferon alpha.
