Thymosin alpha-1 was found to have opposite effects on dendritic cells depending on whether the immune challenge is viral or bacterial. It boosted the maturation and inflammatory response of dendritic cells exposed to viral signals, while dampening these same responses when bacterial signals were present, suggesting it could enhance antiviral immunity while reducing harmful inflammation from bacterial infections.
