Scientists engineered a probiotic bacterium (Lactobacillus plantarum) to produce a viral protein from classical swine fever virus along with thymosin alpha-1 as an immune booster, creating an oral vaccine for pigs. Pigs vaccinated with the combined formulation developed stronger immune responses -- including mucosal, antibody, and cellular immunity -- than those given the viral protein alone, suggesting this approach could be a promising vaccine strategy against swine fever.
