A bovine growth hormone-releasing factor analogue was rapidly broken down in both pig and cow blood plasma, with the main cleavage occurring at the same site attributed to the enzyme dipeptidylpeptidase IV. Pig plasma degraded the peptide about twice as fast as cow plasma, which correlated with higher enzyme activity in pig blood. Adding a specific enzyme inhibitor extended the peptide's half-life from 22 minutes to over 83 minutes, suggesting that protecting GRF from this enzyme could significantly improve its therapeutic usefulness.
