Pigs immunized against somatostatin showed consistently higher baseline growth hormone levels and more robust responses to repeated GRF injections compared to control animals, which became unresponsive after their first GRF-triggered growth hormone pulse. Fasting also independently raised growth hormone levels in both immunized and control pigs. These findings demonstrate that somatostatin is a major regulator of growth hormone in pigs, and that neutralizing it allows for more sustained and consistent growth hormone responses to stimulation.
