In 36 short children, researchers found a positive correlation between the growth hormone response to a GHRH injection and the child's spontaneous 24-hour growth hormone secretion pattern. However, growth hormone levels in the three hours immediately before the GHRH test had a strong negative influence on the response, meaning children who had recent growth hormone pulses showed smaller responses to the test. This highlights that GHRH test results are useful for estimating a child's overall growth hormone secretory capacity, but the timing relative to natural secretion patterns matters significantly.
