The opioid analogue G-DAMME and GHRH each independently stimulated growth hormone release in healthy men, and when given together, the combined response exceeded what a maximally stimulating dose of GHRH could produce alone. Since the GHRH dose was already at its maximum, the additional effect of the opioid likely operates through a different mechanism, most probably by suppressing somatostatin release. This demonstrates that opioid-based growth hormone stimulation works independently of and additively with the GHRH pathway.
