A supposedly superactive GHRH analogue that showed greatly enhanced potency in rats was compared to standard GHRH 1-29 in human volunteers, but both produced equivalent growth hormone responses and had similar blood levels and clearance rates. This species difference suggests that the enhanced activity seen in rats does not translate to humans, possibly due to differences in how the GHRH receptor interacts with modified peptides between species. The finding is important for drug development, as it shows rat data may not predict human efficacy for GHRH analogues.
