When sheep were infused with free fatty acids to mimic the elevated levels seen during fasting, their pulsatile growth hormone secretion was significantly suppressed, and their pituitary response to injected GRF was markedly blunted. In contrast, luteinizing hormone secretion and the LH response to GnRH were completely unaffected by the fatty acid infusion. This demonstrates that elevated free fatty acids specifically inhibit the growth hormone axis while leaving reproductive hormone signaling intact.
