Researchers found that the peptides PHI and VIP each cause relaxation of the opossum internal anal sphincter through their own separate receptor types. Blocking PHI receptors did not affect VIP-induced relaxation, and blocking VIP receptors did not affect PHI-induced relaxation, confirming the receptors are distinct. The study also found that PHI likely does not play a major role in the normal reflex relaxation of the anal sphincter that occurs during rectal distension.
