Long-term treatment of low-birthweight and normal-birthweight lambs with twice-daily GHRH injections from birth stimulated growth hormone release, with low-birthweight lambs showing particularly strong and prolonged responses. The treatment increased somatomedin C levels in low-birthweight lambs and appeared to boost cell production in bone growth plates. These results suggest GHRH therapy may be especially beneficial for animals or potentially children born with low birthweight, where the growth hormone system may be particularly responsive to stimulation.
