This study established the evolutionary conservation of thymosin alpha-1 by detecting it across diverse species including insects, crabs, protozoa, fungi, and bacteria using radioimmunoassay and immunofluorescence. The peptide was biochemically isolated from crab tissues by reverse-phase HPLC and found as an extracellular product from Mycobacterium species. The broad phylogenetic distribution suggests thymosin alpha-1 originated as a general exocrine molecule in unicellular organisms before the evolution of the immune system.
