Researchers tested whether combining nighttime subcutaneous GHRH infusions with the drug pyridostigmine could enhance growth hormone secretion in short, slowly growing children. The GHRH infusions successfully boosted pulsatile growth hormone release in a dose-dependent manner, but adding pyridostigmine had no additional effect on either baseline or stimulated growth hormone levels. This suggests that in these children, reducing somatostatin tone with pyridostigmine does not provide extra benefit beyond what GHRH infusion alone achieves.
