Scientists investigated why combining GHRH-blocking and LHRH-blocking compounds works better than either alone for shrinking enlarged prostates in rats. The combination produced nearly 30% prostate shrinkage and a synergistic 57% growth inhibition of prostate cells in the lab, trapping cells in the S-phase of their growth cycle and altering the expression of over 40 genes involved in growth and inflammation. Importantly, the combination was more effective against diseased prostate cells than normal prostate cells, suggesting targeted therapeutic potential.
