Several nootropic (brain-boosting) drugs, including the peptide Semax, were tested in two strains of mice that differ in their baseline anxiety and exploratory behavior. All tested drugs improved exploration in the naturally more anxious, less exploratory mouse strain, with Semax also reducing anxiety in those animals. The results suggest these compounds work best when the brain is already under-performing, rather than enhancing an already high baseline.
