Patients with hyperthyroidism showed significantly reduced and delayed growth hormone responses to GHRH compared to healthy controls. After one month of antithyroid treatment with methimazole, thyroid hormone levels normalized but growth hormone responses remained blunted. It took three months of treatment before growth hormone responses to GHRH showed meaningful improvement, suggesting that the pituitary needs extended time to recover its growth hormone secretion capacity after prolonged exposure to excess thyroid hormones.
