Scientists tested GHRH-blocking compounds directly on human pituitary tumor tissue from a patient with a growth hormone-secreting adenoma. The compounds successfully prevented GHRH from stimulating excess growth hormone release from the tumor cells, working comparably to somatostatin-based drugs already used in clinical practice. This provides the first direct evidence that GHRH blockers could be used to treat GHRH-driven forms of acromegaly, particularly in patients for whom surgery is not an option.
