Semax and four modified versions that differ only in their first amino acid were compared for how quickly they are broken down by enzymes. Three of the variants (with alanine, glycine, or threonine substituted for the original methionine) were more resistant to degradation than standard Semax. The findings point toward design strategies for creating longer-lasting Semax-like peptides.
