Using a mass spectrometry approach to study small proteins in neural progenitor cells, researchers identified prothymosin alpha (thymosin alpha-1's precursor) among proteins that changed in abundance during brain cell differentiation. The findings highlight new potential biomarkers for identifying neural stem cells and reveal unexpected complexity in how cytoskeletal proteins are processed during neural development.
