In healthy men, the growth hormone response to GHRH was strongly influenced by whether growth hormone levels were already rising, falling, or stable in the hour beforehand, with rising levels predicting a much larger response. Pretreatment with the alpha-2 adrenergic drug clonidine made the GHRH response more predictable but did not increase its magnitude, while prior GHRH markedly blunted the response to clonidine. These findings suggest that clonidine stimulates growth hormone through pathways beyond just GHRH release.
