Salmon calcitonin was found to significantly suppress the growth hormone response to GHRH in healthy adults, and this suppression persisted even when pyridostigmine was given to reduce somatostatin tone. Since pyridostigmine could not reverse calcitonin's inhibitory effect, the researchers concluded that calcitonin blocks GHRH-stimulated growth hormone release through a mechanism that does not involve changes in hypothalamic somatostatin activity.
