Researchers created modified versions of growth hormone-releasing factor by replacing specific chemical bonds in the peptide chain with a different structural element. Most of the modified peptides had dramatically reduced ability to stimulate growth hormone release, but one particular modification at positions 9-10 produced a compound that actually blocked GRF activity, functioning as an antagonist. This work identified a potential tool for inhibiting GRF signaling at the receptor level.
