Scientists tested a VIP antagonist compound derived from a modified GRF peptide on blood vessel dilation in the cat colon triggered by nerve stimulation. The antagonist reduced nerve-induced blood vessel relaxation by 35-42% without affecting VIP release itself, and also blocked dilation caused by externally administered VIP. These findings confirm that VIP plays a role in nerve-mediated blood vessel dilation in the colon and that this modified peptide can effectively block that action.
