In two patients with tumors that produced growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), researchers found that injecting synthetic GHRH did not trigger additional growth hormone release, even though insulin-induced low blood sugar still could. This suggests that prolonged exposure to GHRH desensitizes the pituitary gland to further GHRH stimulation, and that different mechanisms, possibly involving somatostatin, control growth hormone release depending on the stimulus.
