Researchers showed that pentagastrin (a gastrin analog) stimulates growth hormone release in humans, but this effect was completely blocked by prior GHRH administration. Since gastrin did not directly affect GH release from pituitary cells in culture, the findings indicate that gastrin triggers GH secretion by acting at the hypothalamic level rather than directly on the pituitary.
