A chemical that mimics a panic-inducing gut hormone (CCK-4) made rats significantly more anxious and depressed in behavioral tests. Intranasal Semax given beforehand normalized the animals' behavior, reducing both anxiety and depressive responses to control levels. Notably, Semax had no effect on mood in normal, unstressed animals - it acted only in the context of already-elevated anxiety.
