This study found that the steroid dexamethasone kills neural progenitor cells and immature neurons in the developing hippocampus through programmed cell death. Neonatal exposure to glucocorticoids depleted the limited pool of brain stem cells, leading to a sustained reduction in hippocampal size with potential long-term neurological and psychiatric consequences.
