In mice that performed poorly on exploration tests, several nootropic drugs including Semax raised levels of BDNF - a key brain growth factor - specifically in the hippocampus. The same drugs had no effect on BDNF in mice that were already good explorers. Because the BDNF increase only appeared under conditions of cognitive deficit, the study suggests these drugs work by correcting a deficiency rather than generally boosting brain function.
