Researchers investigated whether the enzyme aldose reductase contributes to nerve damage in diabetic rats by altering gene expression in sensory nerve cells. Treatment with the aldose reductase inhibitor zenarestat corrected abnormal increases in a neurotrophin receptor, suggesting that the sugar metabolism pathway known as the polyol pathway plays a role in diabetic nerve disease.
