Researchers investigated why genetically obese Zucker rats have severely impaired growth hormone secretion. They found that the defect stems primarily from insufficient stimulation by hypothalamic GRF rather than excessive somatostatin, as the obese rats showed reduced hypothalamic GRF content, decreased pituitary GH stores, and blunted responses to GRF injections that could not be reversed by blocking somatostatin.
