Scientists established the first method for measuring growth hormone secretion in guinea pigs and discovered that, like rats, guinea pigs release GH in an episodic pattern controlled by hypothalamic peptides including GRF and somatostatin. Since guinea pigs grow normally even without GH, this species may primarily use growth hormone for metabolic functions rather than growth, making it a unique model for studying GH biology.
