This study found that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays a critical role in triggering the regenerative response of sensory neurons after peripheral nerve injury. Blocking BDNF immediately after injury reduced the expression of growth-associated genes and the neurons' ability to extend new projections, though BDNF was not needed to maintain the response once it was already underway.
