Scientists successfully produced biologically active thymosin alpha-1 protein in transgenic tomato fruits for the first time. The protein, expressed from four linked gene copies, accumulated in mature fruit and stimulated mouse immune cell growth in laboratory tests, with even higher activity than the same protein produced in bacteria, demonstrating the feasibility of using plants as production factories for this therapeutic peptide.
