Using genetic engineering to remove the peptide adrenomedullin specifically from the brains of mice, researchers found these animals had impaired motor coordination, hyperactivity, and increased anxiety compared to normal mice. The knockout mice also showed reduced survival under low-oxygen stress, confirming that adrenomedullin plays an important neuroprotective role in maintaining brain function under both normal and stressful conditions.
