Researchers developed a method to produce thymosin alpha-1 by engineering bacteria to make a protein containing six linked copies of the peptide, then chemically cutting them apart with hydroxylamine. The released peptide monomers were confirmed to be biologically active, capable of stimulating immune cell growth and affecting tumor cell metabolism.
