Researchers created a synthetic version of the thymosin alpha-1 gene optimized for plant expression and linked four copies together in tandem. When produced in E. coli bacteria, the resulting protein was biologically active and could stimulate mouse spleen cell growth, laying the groundwork for future production of this immune-boosting peptide in plants.
