Researchers used viral gene therapy to deliver brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) to injured neurons after cervical spinal cord injury in animals. Both adeno-associated and lentiviral vectors successfully reversed nerve cell shrinkage and activated regeneration-related genes, while causing significantly less tissue damage than previous protein infusion methods.
