SS-31 and related mitochondria-targeted peptides significantly reduced myocardial infarct size in rats. The study demonstrated that cardioprotection was mediated through mitochondrial targeting and ROS scavenging rather than opioid receptor activation, establishing SS-31 as a potent cardioprotective agent.
