Salmon calcitonin was shown to reduce GHRH-stimulated growth hormone secretion in acromegalic patients, though it did not affect their elevated baseline growth hormone levels. This inhibitory effect on stimulated secretion, which occurred without changes in blood glucose or calcium, suggests calcitonin may act on the pituitary even in patients with growth hormone-producing tumors.
