Analysis of peptide profiles in breast cancer tissue revealed that thymosin alpha-1 levels could distinguish between estrogen receptor-positive and estrogen receptor-negative tumors, with elevated levels in ER-negative cancers and reduced levels in ER-positive ones. Since the precursor protein prothymosin alpha is involved in estrogen receptor signaling, thymosin alpha-1 may serve as a surrogate biomarker indicating ER functionality in breast cancer.
