Immunizing lactating beef cows against growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF) effectively shut down the normal pulsatile release of growth hormone and lowered levels of both somatotropin and insulin-like growth factor I throughout lactation. The immunization also blocked the growth hormone response to stimulatory compounds, confirming that GRF is essential for driving growth hormone secretion in cattle.
