Thymosin alpha-1 was shown to activate peritoneal macrophages, which when transferred into mice with lymphoma, significantly prolonged the survival of the tumor-bearing animals. The anti-tumor effect worked by stimulating the macrophages to produce cytokines that further amplified their own cancer-fighting activity, supporting the development of thymosin alpha-1-based immunotherapy against cancer.
